How to Connect a Laptop to a TV to Use for Video?

An added bonus to owning a laptop is that, in many cases, you have the ability to connect it to your television set. You may want to connect your laptop to your television in order to view files at a larger size, see details in pictures or most often, watch movies. Connecting your laptop to your TV to watch video is simple with the proper cables and settings.

Check your laptop for a video cable connection. Many laptops come with an S-video port, which is also supported by most all television sets on the market.

You may also find a VGA port on your laptop but this port is only usable on HDTVs. DVI and HDMI ports are also possibilities that provide very clear picture quality. DVI ports are typically found on Mac computers.

Make sure your TV is compatible with your laptop. More often than not, your TV will at least have an S-video connection. If not, you will have one of the other connection types. Each type is usually easily labeled on the back of the television.

Purchase or order the right cable. Double-check that you're ordering the right cable or you will not be able to properly use your laptop on your TV.

You may need to order a separate audio cable as well in order to get sound to travel from your laptop to your TV.Attach the cable to your TV. Then attach the other end of the cable to the video connection port your laptop. Turn both devices on.

Set your television to the proper setting in order to view the laptop activity. Many times, the TV has its own separate PC setting. In some cases, to see the PC, you'll need to tune to a specific video channel, such as Video 1 or Video 2.Change your laptop's screen resolution if necessary.

Sometimes, TVs can't handle higher screen resolutions that your laptop may be set to. Try putting your laptop's screen resolution at 800x600. Keep adjusting the screen resolution until you have a picture on your television screen.

Check your audio settings. Try playing your video once you have the image set up. If you can hear the audio, you don't need to do anything else.

If you don't hear sound, connect your audio cable to the TV and laptop. Open your laptop's sound settings and make sure it is set to broadcast over the cable connected rather than through the laptop speakers.

if I Dropped My Laptop Screen How to Fix

A laptop is a very fragile piece of electronics. Dropping your laptop will usually cause the screen to crack or break, meaning that you will need to replace the screen.

Nevertheless, having a computer technician replace your laptop screen can be very expensive. If you replace your laptop screen, you can save yourself a lot of money. To replace a screen, you do not have to be technically inclined. You just need to follow a few simple directions.

Verify that all that is broken is the laptop screen. To do this all you will need to do is plug an external monitor into your laptop. If everything is working correctly with the external monitor, you can rest assured that it is just the screen that needs to be replaced.

Remove your laptop's battery and disconnect the laptop from the electrical outlet. Locate the screw covers, which are usually located on screen's surrounding frame. Remove the screw covers by prying back the corner to see if there is a screw underneath. There are normally four to six screws that need to be removed. Make sure that you remove all screws and screw covers and set them aside.

At the bottom center of the screen, squeeze your fingers between the frame and screen in order to separate them. It will normally snap loose. Go around the entire frame to make sure that it is completely separated from the screen.

Once this is done, you should see the screen in its metal frame and the inverter board is normally down below. You should now be able to separate the screen from the plastic shell behind it.

Detach the cables connecting your screen to your laptop. The video cable is usually the long ribbon cable taped to the rear of your screen. Remove the tape and then disconnect the cable. Also disconnect the power cable located between the screen and the inverter. You may also need to remove the inverter. To do this, remove the inverter screws and then unplug the power connectors on each side of the inverter board. Unscrew the screws that hold the screen to the frame.

Take out the old screen and replace it with the new one, screwing the new screen into the metal frame. Reattach the cables and put the screws back in.

Test the new screen by putting your battery back in and plugging in your laptop.

How to Connect a TV as a Second Monitor Via USB

Whether you're a graphic designer, video editor or just want to watch a movie from your computer, a TV could always come in handy as a second monitor.

But unless you have a high-end video card or a brand-new computer, making the connection can be a hassle. Fortunately, there are several products out there that let you connect your TV to your computer using nothing but a free USB 2.0 port.

Plug your adapter into the free USB 2.0 port on your computer. Wait for the device driver to install.

Connect the VGA, DVI or HDMI cable to your television. If you're using a PC, continue to Step 3. If you're using a Mac, skip to Step 4.

Open your computer Control Panel and select "Appearance and Personalization," then click "Connect to an External Display." Decide whether you want to extend your desktop onto the TV or duplicate the display. Select the appropriate option from the "Display" menu and click "OK."

Open "System Preferences" and click on "Displays." Click on "Arrangement" and follow the prompts. Select whether you want your monitor to duplicate your current display or extend your desktop.

How To Install An FM Transmitter

If you have a digital music library, you likely also own a bevy of portable electronics, such as a digital media player, mobile phone, or GPS device, that can play the music stored on your PC. And although your music player’s headphones are great for listening to music while walking or running, wearing headphones won’t do (and in some states, is illegal) while you’re driving.

Alternatively, burning music to a CD can be substantially time-consuming, and portable or built-in speakers are a poor substitute for the speakers in your car. An FM transmitter gives you an easy way to play music from your digital audio player over your car’s speakers.

Whether you want to listen to music, podcasts, audio books, or the sound from a movie playing on your media player, FM transmitters allow the entire car to enjoy the audio. Additionally, FM transmitters are portable and easy to install, so you can even take it on a road trip in a friend’s vehicle. In this article, we’ll examine what you should look for when purchasing an FM transmitter and walk you through the setup of an FM transmitter in your car.

What Is An FM Transmitter?

Typically, an FM transmitter plugs into the headphone jack of your media player (some models use a proprietary connector and are exclusive to certain player brands or models), and it converts the audio output to an FM radio signal that your car’s radio can pick up. The FM signal is a low power output that has a range of 10 feet, under ideal conditions. Because radio stations in any given area may already be using many FM frequencies, FM transmitters let you select, either by choosing a specific frequency or switching among a preset list, an FM channel that’s free of interference.

Depending on the prevalence of FM signals in your area, strong FM signals may overpower your FM transmitter, so you’ll hear static or other radio stations bleeding over the audio from your media player. If you live in a heavily populated area, the FM transmitter may produce static on nearly every frequency you select. There’s a limited signal range because, by U.S. federal law, the FM transmitters can only transmit at full strength up to 10 feet, and after that, the FM signal must begin to die out. For best results, try the 87.7 to 91.9MHz frequencies.

They are generally free of radio traffic, because they are reserved for nonprofit radio stations. Check out our “Other Options” sidebar to find out another way to hear audio from your digital media player on your car’s speakers.

USB Wireless FM Transmitter (for apple cellphone user)

For proper operation of the USB transmitter you must keep the following in mind. Make sure connect the audio plug to the speaker/earphone output jack on your computer and select the right transmission frequency. Make sure the computer system volume (from CONTROL PANEL) is NOT set too low. It should be set to Med/High level. Make sure you increase the volume level of the media software you are using (e.g. Windows Media Player, iTunes, WinAmp, etc.). Start at MED/HIGH level, volume set too high will cause distortion, but volume set too low will decrease the transmitter's power output. Remember, the transmitter works similar to a pair of speakers so you need to increase the volume level to increase the power output.

Apple Mac OS X users only:
Attention Apple MAC OS X USERS: If NO sound is being transmitted, then follow these instructions below:
Go to >>The Apple Menu
Go to >>System Preferences
Go to >>Hardware >>>>>Sound
Go to >>Output TAB
The audio device should appear in a list as The "USB Audio DAC"
Select >>"USB Audio DAC" from the list
Once selected you should hear an audible system beep from an FM radio set to receive the radio signal from the USB device.
You should now be able to transmit to your FM radio. As with both systems (PC/MAC) the sound will no longer be output to your computer speakers but rather to the FM radio set to receive the transmission. Once you unplug the transmitter from your USB Port, sound will once again be output to your default computer speakers as usual. DO NOT UNPLUG THE FM TRANSMITTER FROM YOUR USB PORT WHILE THE TRANSMITTER IS WORKING. STOP AUDIO APPLICATION FIRST, THEN UNPLUG THE FM TRANSMITTER FROM YOUR USB PORT.
