How to Connect a Laptop to a TV to Use for Video?

An added bonus to owning a laptop is that, in many cases, you have the ability to connect it to your television set. You may want to connect your laptop to your television in order to view files at a larger size, see details in pictures or most often, watch movies. Connecting your laptop to your TV to watch video is simple with the proper cables and settings.

Check your laptop for a video cable connection. Many laptops come with an S-video port, which is also supported by most all television sets on the market.

You may also find a VGA port on your laptop but this port is only usable on HDTVs. DVI and HDMI ports are also possibilities that provide very clear picture quality. DVI ports are typically found on Mac computers.

Make sure your TV is compatible with your laptop. More often than not, your TV will at least have an S-video connection. If not, you will have one of the other connection types. Each type is usually easily labeled on the back of the television.

Purchase or order the right cable. Double-check that you're ordering the right cable or you will not be able to properly use your laptop on your TV.

You may need to order a separate audio cable as well in order to get sound to travel from your laptop to your TV.Attach the cable to your TV. Then attach the other end of the cable to the video connection port your laptop. Turn both devices on.

Set your television to the proper setting in order to view the laptop activity. Many times, the TV has its own separate PC setting. In some cases, to see the PC, you'll need to tune to a specific video channel, such as Video 1 or Video 2.Change your laptop's screen resolution if necessary.

Sometimes, TVs can't handle higher screen resolutions that your laptop may be set to. Try putting your laptop's screen resolution at 800x600. Keep adjusting the screen resolution until you have a picture on your television screen.

Check your audio settings. Try playing your video once you have the image set up. If you can hear the audio, you don't need to do anything else.

If you don't hear sound, connect your audio cable to the TV and laptop. Open your laptop's sound settings and make sure it is set to broadcast over the cable connected rather than through the laptop speakers.
