How to Install a GATEWAY SA1 Laptop Screen

If your Gateway laptop has been dropped or experienced a power surge, the LCD screen may go blank or flicker intermittently. Before buying a new laptop you should consider replacing the screen yourself, which will be a much cheaper option.

Power down the Gateway laptop. Unplug the power cable and close the screen. Turn the laptop over.

Locate the battery release latch at the upper-left end of the laptop. Push the latch to the left and pull the battery out of the laptop case. Turn the laptop back over and open the screen.Replacing a laptop screen can be a complicated process because of how the LCD screen is attached to the computer's case. Besides replacing the screen itself you also need to replace the Gateway laptop's inverter board.

Push the edge of the screwdriver underneath the screen hinge at the lower-right end of the LCD screen. Lift the hinge off the laptop and set it aside. Set the replacement inverter board onto the open port at the bottom edge of the laptop screen. Connect the screw and the two cables. Place the cover back on the screen and reattach the screws.Push the screw covers back onto the screws. Put the screen hinges back into place.

Check your audio settings. Try playing your video once you have the image set up. If you can hear the audio, you don't need to do anything else.

Verify that all that is broken is the laptop screen. To do this all you will need to do is plug an external monitor into your laptop. If everything is working correctly with the external monitor, you can rest assured that it is just the screen that needs to be replaced.

At the bottom center of the screen, squeeze your fingers between the frame and screen in order to separate them. It will normally snap loose. Go around the entire frame to make sure that it is completely separated from the screen.

Once this is done, you should see the screen in its metal frame and the inverter board is normally down below. You should now be able to separate the screen from the plastic shell behind it.

Detach the cables connecting your screen to your laptop. The video cable is usually the long ribbon cable taped to the rear of your screen. Remove the tape and then disconnect the cable. Also disconnect the power cable located between the screen and the inverter. You may also need to remove the inverter. To do this, remove the inverter screws and then unplug the power connectors on each side of the inverter board. Unscrew the screws that hold the screen to the frame.

Take out the old screen and replace it with the new one, screwing the new screen into the metal frame. Reattach the cables and put the screws back in.

Test the new screen by putting your battery back in and plugging in your laptop.

Plug your adapter into the free USB 2.0 port on your computer. Wait for the device driver to install.

What Is An FM Transmitter?

Typically, an FM transmitter plugs into the headphone jack of your media player (some models use a proprietary connector and are exclusive to certain player brands or models), and it converts the audio output to an FM radio signal that your car’s radio can pick up. The FM signal is a low power output that has a range of 10 feet, under ideal conditions. Because radio stations in any given area may already be using many FM frequencies, FM transmitters let you select, either by choosing a specific frequency or switching among a preset list, an FM channel that’s free of interference.

Depending on the prevalence of FM signals in your area, strong FM signals may overpower your FM transmitter, so you’ll hear static or other radio stations bleeding over the audio from your media player. If you live in a heavily populated area, the FM transmitter may produce static on nearly every frequency you select. There’s a limited signal range because, by U.S. federal law, the FM transmitters can only transmit at full strength up to 10 feet, and after that, the FM signal must begin to die out. For best results, try the 87.7 to 91.9MHz frequencies.

Oke, that title may be a little over the top, but it is what it pretends to be. And rightfully so since I've wasted, err spend a lot of time figuring out how to get it up and running. But first how this came all about.

A little history
The company where I work occasionaly sells old office equipment to its employees for a small amount of money. Sometimes it's tables and chairs, sometimes old lab equipment. You know, tech freaks love that kind of stuff. At the top of the whishlist are old PC's and laptops, which can be put to good use on all kind of home projects. So, on one of these occasions I ended up with a Compaq Armada 4120, including a docking station.
It had Windows 95 installed on it and nothing else. But that was oke with me since I had other plans for it anyway; it was to become my Linux playground. It hardly cost me anything and was in no way needed for my daily computational needs, so I could wreck it without causing a problem. Together with a friend I started out to get things started. First we figured out how to repartition the harddisk, in order to save Win95, add a Linux partition and have some swapspace as well. Unfortunately this Armada came without the CD-ROM craddle, which would have made installing any Linux distribution a lot easier. Either a disk set had to be created or a network install attempted. Of course the latter was a bigger challange so we choose that. A spare PCMCIA Ethernet card was put in the slot, a PCMCIA setup disk created from the intended distribution (we used Redhat 6.1 Cartman at the time) and put in the disk drive. Then we fired her up. Well, as you've probably guessed we loaded Redhat, compiled a custom kernel tailored to the Armada and setup LILO to play around with various settings. Once that kernel was pretty much the way we wanted it, I started exploring the motherload of software and services that were available on the machine. Configuring all this stuff, especially the X server was very educational, so it served its purpose very well.

Of course the Internet proved a valuable source of information on this. These are the pages I used to get most of the stuff working.

It lead me to believe that there is a TI ThunderLAN chip in there. So I started with that driver. I first tried it with the 2.2 kernel I have been using until now, which is modular, so I could load the driver on runtime. 'insmod tlan duplex=2' would load the driver and get things going. Well it didn't. After trying several other drivers to no avail I focused my attention to the 2.4.2 kernel sources. Maybe it contained a better driver which may work on this setup after all. After building a few monolithic kernels I still didn't get the result I was hoping for.

Time to call in the experts. From the driver sources in the kernel I found a mailing list on sourceforge which is dedicated to the TLAN chipset support on Linux, moderated by the driver maintainer Sam Chessman. I had hoped that someone on the list had seen the problem before and could point me to a rapid solution, but no one did. Instead Sam provided very good step by step guidance through the process of determining the cause of the problem.
One thing that stood out was the fact that the Ethernet chip wasn't to be found on the PCI bus. So how was it hooked up to the system? What I had noted in the Win95 driver was that there is a parallel port setting in there. Curious. Then someone mentioned pocket adapters. They were popular for a few years after which PCMCIA and USB adapters took the market by storm. They were dongle style parallel port adapters which create a Ethernet port. D-link and Xircom were the prominent brands. Together with this conversation this lead me to believe that maybe there is no TLAN chip in there after all. After all, it was only an unconfirmed statement. Now with more questions than answers there remained only one thing to do. To open up the docking station...

How to Use a Digital Picture Frame As a PC Monitor

Digital picture frames were created primarily to display photo files. Improvements to the technology allows many digital picture frames to use a direct peripheral connection to perform as a color display monitor for your computer. These picture frames can be used without the need for a dedicated video-card connection and often without the need to download and install additional device drivers. Most digital frames already have the necessary software for secondary display function, giving it plug-and-play operability.

Connect the digital picture frame to a USB port on your PC with a USB cable. Power up the computer and turn the power on for the digital picture frame.

The large connector on one end of the frame's USB cable should go into the USB port of the PC with the mini-connector end connecting to the picture frame.

Allow the PC to detect the picture frame. The Windows XP operating system and above should go through an automatic detection process, applying the necessary drivers. If the drivers are not available in your operating system you will have to supply the drivers yourself, either by downloading them from the picture frame manufacturer's website or by loading the drivers from a CD included with your picture frame. Apply the necessary drivers by running them from the CD or from your hard drive.

Choose the desired settings for your digital picture frame through the display settings. To access the display settings for your new PC display, right-click with the mouse on you operating system desktop. Choose "Display Settings", then click on the listed digital picture frame among the monitor choices.

Choose your preferred display type, either "Mirror" which displays an exact duplicate of your primary display, or "Extended Desktop" which expands your desktop to the new display. Choose the resolution and color depth for the picture frame, and then press "OK" to save the new settings. Touchscreen monitors have been a staple of science-fiction movies for decades. Now they are a reality for the average home computer user. Make sure you have all the necessary parts. When you unpack your new monitor, make certain that all of the necessary cables were included. If not, be certain to get the cables recommended by the manufacturer of your monitor.

Connect the monitor to the computer. Turn the computer off. There are two scenarios that will be possible when you begin to connect the cables. In the first, they will be connected permanently to the monitor and you will need to plug them into the appropriate port on the computer.

The second is that they are all detached and need to be attached to both the monitor and computer. They will not only be color coded but they will also only fit in their appropriate slots. After all of the cables are attached, plug in the power supply to both the monitor and the electrical source.

While it may seem like fixing and replacing a screen is a job left only to professionals, everyday computer users with a couple of tools and some careful measures can purchase a new DELL Inspiron Mini 10 LCD screen, remove the old, and install the new in a relatively short amount of time.

Purchase your new LCD screen. How to Set Up Eight Monitors on One PC

Whether you are setting up a computer display for a trade show or equipping a training lab, you'll need a KVM Switch if you want to send video signal from

one computer to multiple monitors. The possibilities for controlling other computers (including keyboard, video, and mouse functions or "KVM") from one

central computer are almost endless. KVM switches come in many design configurations and price levels and are available for purchase online.

Determine what functions the KVM switch must perform; different types of KVM switches can accomplish different tasks. If you want to simply send a video

signal from one "control" computer tower to eight stand-alone monitors, for example, an "8-output video" KVM switch will work. The KVM switch will feature

one set of "master inputs" for the control computer, and eight video outputs. These video outputs will accept DB9 type ports. DB9 ports are blue and shaped

like a parallelogram. Purchase the KVM switch that meets your needs and your budget.

Turn off the control computer. Place the KVM switch box near the control computer.Plug the hardwired DB9 video plug coming out of the KVM switch into the

corresponding DB9 video plug on your computer tower. Plug your control computer monitor into the KVM "output" switch set aside for the control monitor.

Connect the video monitors to the DB9 output ports on the KVM switch. If the video monitors are located very far away from the control computer and the KVM

switch, you may need to purchase extension cables to span this distance. These extension cables are available at local computer parts shops and online. They

will have one male DB9 end and one female DB9 end. Plug the extension cable into the satellite monitor cable and then connect the other end of the extension

into the KVM switch. If any of the monitors are of the DVI type, purchase an adapter to convert the DVI monitor to DB9.

Boot the control computer and switch on the control computer monitor screen. You will see the desktop boot to the control computer video screen. The signal

to your monitor is coming out of the KVM switch.Turn on the satellite video monitors at their power switches.On the KVM switch box, select any of the

satellite monitors that you want to receive video signal. You can turn off a video feed to any of the satellite monitors by turning off that monitor's

assigned feed button on the KVM box. The image coming from the control computer tower, and seen on the control computer monitor, will display across all

satellite monitors when they are selected "on."

Adjust your video card adapter settings if you would like to attempt to "stretch" the image coming out of the control panel across all satellite monitors in "jumbotron" fashion. Not all video card adapters are capable of this trick, however. Go to Start/ControlPanel/Display/Settings/Monitors to see if your video card allows for "stretching" across more than one desktop field. Creating one large "jumbotron" image using clustered monitor screens often requires use of a special type of video card or KVM switch made for this purpose. These "jumbotron" cards and switches are available online.

The Video Card

To see if your video card is able to power two monitors, first check to see if there are two video outputs on the back of
your video card or read the video card instruction manual. If your video card is unable to support two monitors, consider either installing a second video card or replacing your existing video card with a model that will support dual monitors.

Replacing or installing a new video card is a fairly simple process. While you should always read the manufacturer's instructions, the basic procedure involves opening up your computer, unscrewing and disconnecting the existing video card, and putting the new video card in its place.

The Monitor Switch
If you are unable or not interested in installing a new video card into your machine, you can also support two video displays through the use of a monitor switch. A monitor switch is a set top box that will allow you to switch between monitors externally from you computer.

Making the Connections
Whether connecting to a dual monitor video card or monitor switch, hooking up your projector and computer screen is simple. Most modern projectors have a VGA or SVGA port. This is the standard connection used for PC monitors. If you are working in a Macintosh-based platform, you will need either a projector that supports DVI, which is rare, or a VGA to DVI adapter cable, which is much more common.

To connect your dual displays to a video card, connect the monitor cables directly into the card, using the appropriate adapters. Configuring the Computer

How to Connect Two DVI LCD SCREENS/Monitors to One PC

Having two monitors connected to your computer gives you expanded options for more productive desktop computing. For example, a web developer can have programming code on one screen and an Internet browser in another to test that code.

This can create a smoother "work flow" that reduces the time it takes to complete tasks and reduce errors. There are several ways to connect multiple monitors to your PC. The items mentioned below address multiple connection solutions.

Check your connections. Ideally, your video card has two DVI ports. If it has only one port, you will not get two separate displays. You can install a "splitter" on the signal cable, but this will only show the same image on both monitors.

If you have one DVI port and one VGA port on the back of your computer, you can obtain a small adapter that will convert the VGA port to DVI. A monitor connected to the VGA port will not have a digital signal, but this should not have a substantial effect on image quality. If you only have a DVI cable and a VGA cable, you can buy an adapter that will convert a DVI port to a VGA port.

Verify that you have the proper cables. Make sure you are not using a DVI-A cable, which is an analog cable that may not be compatible with the DVI port on the back of your monitor. DVI-D and DVI-I are fine.

And lastly, if your monitor has a resolution larger than 1920 x 1200 pixels , that monitor will need a "dual-link" DVI cable, sometimes known as DVI-DL. The page linked below in the References section contains diagrams for identifying the different varieties of DVI cables. If you are connecting a laptop to an external monitor, it may have a "mini DVI" port that needs an adapter to connect to a DVI cable.

Connect your monitors. The best way to do this is to have one monitor already attached, rather than connecting them both at the same time. Otherwise, you may encounter display corruption that will make the problem difficult to troubleshoot.

Check the settings of your newly connected monitors. In Windows, right-click on the desktop, select "Personalize" from the pop-up menu, and click on

"Display Settings." Here you can adjust the settings of both monitors. You can select them from the drop-down menu in the middle of the window, or by clicking on their icons just above that menu.

In Mac OS X, click on the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of the screen,select "System Preferences," click on "Displays," and select the "Display" tab.

You may need to click the "Detect Displays" button to get both monitors to appear in this menu. You may need to disable Expose and Spaces before attaching the second monitor.

Locate the SIM card if your mobile phone is a GSM style phone. Pull back the metal covering over the SIM card and then remove the card. Flip the phone over so that you can see the LCD screen. Slide the edge of a flat head screwdriver in between the seam of the plastic cover on the bottom of the phone. Wiggle the screwdriver up and down gently to unlock the catch underneath the plastic cover. Lift the entire plastic cover up and then off the phone.Find the latch on the side of the LCD screen and unlock it with the tweezers. Pull the screen slightly off of the phone and then disconnect the cable running from the screen to the phone. Lay the replacement screen back into the phone and attach the cable.

Set the plastic cover back onto the phone and then flip it back over. Re-attach the metal plate and put the screws back in. Push the RF grommet back into place and then place the SIM card and battery back in the phone. Put the plastic cover on the back off the phone and then power it on to ensure the screen is working correctly.

Run the small plastic wedge along the groove of the iPod casing. Insert the wedge and gently pry the case apart.Lay the iPod face down, and very slowly and gently lift up on the back. You will see the battery-connecting ribbon. Using the flathead screwdriver, lift up on the lever that holds the battery cable in place and disconnect the cable. Lay the back of the iPod and the battery down.Lift up on the hard drive and flip it over. You will see where the hard drive is connected to the iPod by a larger cable, secured by a brown lever.

The screen inverter failure is very similar to the backlight lamp failure. In both cases the screen gets very dark and the image on the screen becomes very faint, barely visible under a bright light. If you suspect the inverter board failure, I know only one reliable way to test that. It’s either replacing the inverter board with a known good one and see if it works, or connecting a known good backlight lamp and see if your presumably bad inverter lights it up.

In most cases I go with the second method – testing the laptop with a known good backlight lamp. Why? Because backlight lamps are pretty much universal. The same backlight lamp will work with many different inverters as long as they have matching connectors. I’ll talk about these connectors later.

The inverter board is located inside the Dell Inspiron E1505 display panel under the Gateway NX560XL LCD Screen. In most laptops you can access the inverter board if you remove the LCD screen bezel. The inverter board has connectors on both ends. The left side of the inverter is connected to the LCD cable. The right side of the inverter is connected to the backlight lamp which is mounted inside the LCD screen. Check out this display diagram.

To make sure that inverter board is getting power from the motherboard (via the LCD cable), you can test it with a multimeter. In my case I connected the “+” lead of the multimeter to the pin 1 on the connector and the “-” lead to the ground trace around the screw hole. I got about 19.4V DC on that side of the inverter, so it’s getting power from the motherboard.

WARNING! If you accidentally short something on the inverter while testing it, you can damage the inverter or even the motherboard. Proceed on your own risk! Not sure? Don’t do that!So, the inverter is getting power from the motherboard, but the Gateway NX560XL LCD Screen is still dark. Apparently, it’s either bad inverter or failed backlight. Let’s test it with a known good backlight.

There are two different types of backlight connectors, you can see them on the picture below. The top one (big) is not as common as the bottom one (small). I do most of my test with a backligth lamp which has a small connector.

Here’s what I’m going to do:
1. I will unplug the Gateway NX560XL LCD Screen from the right side of the inverter. Basically, I’m unplugging the LCD backligth lamp which is located inside the screen.
2. I will plug in my known good backlight lamp which you can see on the picture below. Please notice that my test backlight lamp is shorter than the screen, but for the test purpose that’s OK.

Finally, when you ready to test the laptop, unplug the LCD screen from the right side of the inverter.Plug in your test backlight lamp and turn on the laptop.In my case, the backlight lamp lights up, so the inverter board works properly.

Dell Inspiron Disassembly Instructions

Taking apart some laptop computers can be difficult, as is the case with the Dell Inspiron laptop. This computer has so many layers and screws that a person can quickly become confused and irritated during the disassembly. If you must strip the computer for repairs or upgrading, be sure to pack a lunch, and take a few breaks when you begin to feel overwhelmed. As long as you don't misplace any screws, the disassembly shouldn't be too painful.

Preparing the Inspiron for Disassembly
To perform this procedure, you'll need a small Phillips-head screwdriver, a small plastic wedge or a flat-head screwdriver, a small adjustable wrench or a 5mm hexagonal socket, a box of sandwich bags to put screws and small parts in, and a marker to label the bags.

Back up important information and power down the computer. Remove any external components attached to the computer and then take off the battery. Wear a wrist grounding strap or touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge the static from your body and now you're ready to take the Inspiron apart. Remember to put parts and the screws that hold them together in the same place so you don't get confused during assembly.

Start at the Top
Extract the screws on the hinge cover, open the LCD screen, and insert the plastic wedge or flat-head screwdriver inside the groove on the top-right side of the frame above the keyboard to pry the hinge cover off the computer.

Remove the two screws securing the circuit board under the hinge cover and carefully disconnect the flat cable underneath the circuit board. Take the circuit board out of the computer. Extract the keyboard screws and fold the keyboard down over the palm rest. Disconnect the flat cable that connects the keyboard to the motherboard and take the keyboard off the computer. Remove the two screws that secure the video cable to the motherboard, disconnect the cable, and then remove the other six screws that hold the screen to the computer. Remove the two screen screws on the back of the computer and take the screen off. Remove the three long screws that secure the metal panel and turn the computer over to disassemble the bottom.

Disassembling the Bottom of the InspironPull out the floppy disk drive, remove the two screws that hold it to the laptop, and disconnect the flat cable.

Take the floppy disk drive off the computer. Remove the screw from the hard drive compartment (located in the front-center) and take the hard drive off the computer. Near the product key and serial number is the graphics processor fan. Remove the two screws off the cover, take off the cover, and disconnect the fan's cable. Extract the screw on the memory module compartment and take the memory module cover off. Remove the optical drive screw and there is a latch that you can use to push the drive out of the computer. Disconnect the small cable for the modem. Extract the 12 screws that are visible on the bottom of the computer and turn the computer back over.

Finishing the Disassembly
Remove the two screws on the case where the LCD screen was attached. Disconnect the cable where the palm rest and touch pad were located. Remove the graphics card screw (the graphics card is white and has an amber-colored cable on it) and gently pull out the graphics card adapter. Take the metal piece on the right side of the computer out.

How to Fix Samsung Hinge by yourself

The LCD screen on any laptop computer is held into place by two plastic or metal hinges that allow the screen to easily move up and down. When the hinges on your Samsung laptop break, or become rusty, your screen will not open and close properly.

Hold the battery release latch down with one hand and then slide the battery out of the Samsung laptop with your other hand. Flip the laptop back over and then open the LCD screen lid.

Take a thin and flat object such as the edge of a flat head screwdriver and insert it underneath the seam of the plastic bezel piece above the keyboard and just underneath the screen. Pop the piece upwards with the flat object so that you can see underneath it. Disconnect the cable connecting the bezel to the motherboard and then remove the bezel and set it aside.

Power off your Samsung laptop completely and remove the power cable. Unplug any other peripherals that are attached to the laptop, such as any USB devices. Close the top LCD screen lid and flip the Samsung laptop over so that the bottom side of the case is facing upwards.

Disconnect the inverter cable. The inverter cable plugs into the inverter, which is located directly beside it. When an inverter board suffers a mechanical failure or is damaged through a power surge your ACER Aspire 5050 LCD screen will simply stop displaying images. This article covers the repair for a relatively common problem with computer monitor, where the monitor will turn on, but only display a screen for about half a second. Shining a bright light source onto the screen will reveal that the image is there, but the backlight is off. Two capacitors in the power supply have gone bad. Anyone with basic soldering skills should be able to perform this repair, and the cost is quite literally a fraction of buying a new monitor. But buying a new one can save more time.

The cable screw that needs to be removed is circled in red.Remove the back cover and metal shroud under it. There are a number of screws around the outer edge of the back cover. Once you remove those, you'll need to gently pry around the edges of the cover with the flat screwdriver to pop it off. Once you have he back cover removed, you will see a metal shroud covering the electronics. There are a few screws holding Acer Aspire One A110 down as well. Remove the screws and then slide the shroud slightly to the right to remove it. NOTE: There is a black cable running from the monitor's control panel into the shrouded area.
